What is a PAN Card?
Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a ten-digit alphanumeric number, issued in the form of a laminated card, by the Income Tax Department.
A typical PAN is AABPS1205E.
Why is it necessary to have pan? What are the benefits/advantages of having a PAN card ?
It is mandatory to quote PAN on return of income, all correspondence with any income tax authority. From 1 January 2005 it is mandatory to quote PAN on challans for any payments due to Income Tax Department.

It is also compulsory to quote PAN in all documents pertaining to financial transactions notified from time-to-time by the Central Board of Direct Taxes. Some such transactions are sale and purchase of immovable property or motor vehicle or payments in cash, of amounts exceeding Rs. 25,000/-to hotels and restaurants or in connection with travel to any foreign country. It is also mandatory to mention PAN for obtaining a telephone or cellular telephone connection. Likewise, PAN has to be mentioned for making a time deposit exceeding Rs. 50,000/- with a Bank or Post Office or depositing cash of Rs. 50,000/- or more in a Bank.

What is the meaning of PAN card? How is the PAN number formed/calculated ?
IT PAN card is issued under Section 139A of the Income Tax Act.
The PAN structure is as follows: AAAPL1234C: First five characters are letters, next four numerals, last character letter.
The first three letters are sequence of alphabets from AAA to ZZZ
The fourth character informs about the type of holder of the card. Each holder is uniquely defined as below:
  • A — Association of Persons (AOP)
  • B — Body of Individuals (BOI)
  • C — Company
  • F — Firm
  • G — Government
  • H — HUF (Hindu Undivided Family)
  • L — Local Authority
  • J — Artificial Judicial Person
  • P — Individual
  • T — AOP (Trust)

The fifth character of the PAN is the first character

(a) of the surname or last name of the person, in the case of a "Personal" PAN card, where the fourth character is "P" or

(b) of the name of the Entity, Trust, society, or organisation in the case of Company/ HUF/ Firm/ AOP/ BOI/ Local Authority/ Artificial Jurdical Person/ Govt, where the fourth character is "C","H","F","A","T","B","L","J","G".

The last character is an alphabetic check digit.

Nowadays, the DOI (date of issue) of the PAN card is mentioned at the right (vertical) hand side of the photo on the PAN card.
Who should apply for a PAN card ?
All existing assesses or taxpayers or persons who are required to furnish a return of income, even on behalf of others, must obtain PAN.

Any person, who intends to enter into financial transaction where quoting PAN is mandatory, must also obtain PAN.

Who should apply for a new PAN card ?
One should apply for new Pan Card when the applicant has never applied for a Permanent Account Number (PAN) or has never been allotted a PAN number to him/her.
Who should apply for a change or correction in PAN card ?
One should make an application when he/she wants to make some changes or corrections in their existing PAN details such as
  • Change in applicant name, on account of marriage or due to spelling mistake
  • Change in father's name due to spelling mistake or documentation errors
  • Change in date of birth due to documentation errors
Who should apply for a duplicate PAN card ?
One should apply for a duplicate Pan card when a Permanent Account Number (PAN) has already been allotted to the applicant but he/she requires a new duplicate Pan Card due to the following reason:
  • Lost the Pan Card
  • Damaged the Pan Card
  • Wants to change from old to new tamper proof PAN card.
What should you do when you have lost, or damaged your PAN card ? What should you NOT do when you have lost, damaged PAN card?
You should apply for a duplicate PAN card, quoting your PAN number that was previously allotted to you. You should not submit an application for a new PAN number/card.
Can minor apply for a PAN card ? Who can apply on behalf of a minor and mentally challenged?
Section 160 of IT Act, 1961 provides that a non-resident, a minor, lunatic, idiot, and court of wards and such other persons may be represented through a Representative Assessee. In such cases, application for PAN will be made by the Representative Assessee.

When your PAN card is lost/damaged, and applying for a duplicate PAN card, what documents can be submitted as proof of PAN card?
Any one of the following documents can be submitted as Proof of PAN card:
  • Photocopy of PAN card
  • Photocopy of PAN allotment letter
  • Even if any of the above proofs for PAN card are not available, we can still process your PAN application for a duplicate PAN card.
If you need to make changes/corrections in your PAN Card, what documents can be submitted as proof in support of the required changes?
For change in name:
  • on account of marriage :
    1. a) Marriage certificate
    2. b) Marriage invitation card
    3. c) Publication of name change in official gazette
    4. d) Copy of passport showing husband's name
  • on account of reasons other than marriage. :
    1. Publication of name change in official gazette
Change in Father's name:
  • Any ID Proof document for father, that has the correct name

Change in Date of Birth:

What is the procedure for applicants who cannot sign?
In such cases, Left Hand Thumb impression of the applicant should be affixed on Form 49A at the place meant for signatures and got attested by a Magistrate or a Notary Public or a Gazetted Officer, under official seal and stamp.
Can I obtain or use more than one PAN card?
Obtaining or possessing more than one PAN is against the law.
I have been allotted more than one PAN card, what is the procedure for cancellation of other PAN card(s)?
You have to mention the PAN card number which you are using currently on top of the application form. All other PAN card/s inadvertently allotted to you should be mentioned in the online form after clicking yes on the question - Are you having more than 1 PAN card - inadvertently allotted PAN card(s) should be sent for cancellation along with the form.
How long will it take for the application to be processed?
In about 5-10 business days after the application processing begins, PAN number is allotted. In about 10-20 business days, the PAN card gets delivered to you. However, these timelines are only indicative, and may vary based on the number of applications received for processing by the PAN card authorities.
Is it compulsory to mention mobile number and email id in the online form ?
Yes, for the online applicants it is compulsory to mention mobile number and email address, as they will be the only mode by which we can pass updates on the status of your PAN application.
What is Form-49A?
Form 49A is a Application for Allotment of Permanent Account Number in case of Indian Citizen/ Indian Companies/Entities incorporated in India/Unincorporated entities formed in India. Do you need to apply for a PAN when you move or transfer from one city to another?
Permanent Account Number (PAN), as the name suggests, is a permanent number and does not change during lifetime of PAN holder. Changing the address or city, though, may change the Assessing Officer. How long is the validity of the PAN card ? What is the validity period of a PAN card?
The PAN number that is allotted to an individual is valid for the life time of the individual. In cases, when the PAN card is lost, damaged or any corrections need to be made, an application for a duplicate PAN card, quoting the original PAN number need to be made.
Income Tax Department has issued me a PAN card; can I obtain a new tamper proof PAN card?
For obtaining the tamper proof PAN card an application will have to be made in the form for 'Second Oringinal PAN Card', in which existing PAN will have to be indicated and old PAN card surrendered.
I had applied for PAN and received PAN number but have not received the PAN Card?

Is a photograph compulsory for making an application for PAN?
Yes, a couple of stamp size (3.5 * 2.5 inches) photographs are compulsory only in case of 'Individual' applicants.
